2004-2005 In-orchard Trial of Ecologically Sensitive Growing Standards

Funding for these trials has been provided by USEPA Region 5/AFT FQPA Grant Program

During the 2004 growing season 11 growers participated in a trial run of ecologically sensitive apple production standards. Two distinct geographic regions of Wisconsin were chosen for the in-orchard trial of these standards, southeastern, WI and Door County, WI. Each orchardist was assigned an IPM coach who assisted in the evaluation of pesticide application strategies and the level of in -orchard IPM implementation. The individual orchard assessment by the IPM coach allowed orchardists the opportunity to not only reevaluate many past practices but to become educated on innovative tools and techniques. In addition to the benefits of the orchardist IPM coach interaction, orchardists, through the coordination of a network coordinator, formed meeting networks in which members relay pertinent information on growing tools and techniques.

The trials are expected to continue through the 2005 growing season in at the end of which the standards will be assessed. For more information please contact Tomas Jensen.

Stories from the Fields

This is a documentary of fresh market fruit and vegetable growers and their reasoning behind the implementation of IPM on their farms. This video is presented in a two part series and features growers and researchers dedicated to the advancement of the biological control of insects and disease impacting their particular crop. It is the intent of this video to introduce the ideals of IPM to the general public in hopes that consumers will better understand how growers are making on-farm or in-orchard decisions. If you are an educator or would like to learn more about this video please contact Michelle Miller or click on the following links to view it on your computer.

Bridging the Gap: Wisconsin's Eco-Apple Project Professional Development Training

Funding for this training has been provided by the North Central Region SARE Program

In order to assist in the facilitation of ecologically sensitive growing practices by Wisconsin's apple growers it is imperative that County educators are involved in the process. Educators not only play an integral role in the dissemination of educational materials but can help orchardist organize informational networks. This funding allows for 12 County Educators to participate in three orchard IPM meetings. The content of these meetings will provide educators with a better understanding of sustainable apple production for the Wisconsin orchardist.
